From simple camera interviews to very specific customised sound effects or location sound requirements, our choice has always been to go with the highest end recording equipment brands to ensure the best sound quality.
Our big favourites are the Sound Devices brand of recorders and Sennheiser as microphone choice. The picture above displays our Sennheiser Mid Side Stereo kit built with an MKH50 + MKH30.
The Sennheiser MKH50 model is a high grade cardioid microphone capturing sound right in front of the mic, in a heart shape.
The Sennheiser MKH30 is a high grade figure 8 microphone capturing sound from both left and right sides of the MKH50 microphone.
When both mono-sources are combined, with a little hocus pocus post-processing in our studio, not only is the signal fully mono compatible but it also gives us the option of choosing how wide we want the stereo image to be in the final mix AFTER the sound recording! It is the only technique that allows for that much flexibility for an extremely wide and beautiful Stereo image.
For simple interviews, our favourite technique is to combine a Sennheiser MKH8060 shotgun microphone on a boom pole, backed up with a Sanken COS11D lapel microphone, hidden on the talent. This combination has proven to be the most consistent sounding pair to make our lives a lot easier at the dialog editing and mixing stage in studio, by having to tweak very little EQ to find a very crisp, stable and warm matching sound.
Below is an example of what the end result sounds like for our work in the field and post- production in our studio for the 'Shannons Driven' series.
